Vara means fortress, castle, height, side or edge. It is historical background divided into four main periods: Ancient times to Sassanid's era, Sassanid's to Islam, after Islam and contemporary period.
Ancient times to Sassanid's Era:
The caves which had 7 pools and were located in the heights of mountains were the Mehr or Mitra (ancient god) temple. Seven is a holy number in Zoroastrian tradition too. The worshippers of the Mehr used to pray and worship at the time of draught. It could be inferred that because the cave was located in the direction on the sunrise. It was used for morning praying and sacrifices. May be it was one of the oldest observatory in the world.
The Sassanid's to Islam:
During this period the statues referring to the Mehr were wiped off and demolished, but the Mehr was still worshiped as an angle.
After Islam:
The cave has an appropriate strategic and secure situation and drops of sweet water fall from the ceiling of it (remind me ChckCheck Zoroastrian temple close to Ardakan, Yazd province).
The place reminds us on animals, hunting birds, rain-watered farms which were the places of residence for some Ayyars (heroes) and brave people. The tombs of some heroes are located beside the river.
Contemporary Period:
During this period, the cave was used by some hunters and unfortunately, they had damaged it a lot. During 1937-1941 the first stage of its repairs was started at the moment it is being repaired again.
To have access to the cave which is located on the Lar road, after passing a short unpaved road, you reach a station and then you can start hiking. After coming to a fork in the road, the right route goes to the cave and after one hour of hiking, you can reach the cave. Left route goes to some regions such as Zendun_e_Vara, Haft_Odun, Kho_Go_Nish, O_Ghazi, Kharzahreh, GelunarBeShekar, O_Gel_Ku, and Takhtebeshkar. To visit these regions, you need a guide or a leader.

These words meaning:
Zendune_Vara means Vara Prison:
The high and smooth walls of the valley to the Cave have been assimilated to the walls of a prison.
Haft Odune means seven pools or ponds:
Haft means seven and was very important in Mitraism and Dervishes' tradition. O means water in some Iranian dialects. Odune or Abdan means pool. In Iran we have many places named Haft Odune, Haft Abdan, Haft Cheshmeh, and Haft Houze. In the height of central Alburz chain mountain, near Tehran, and midway from Palang Chal (means Leopard den) shelter, to the summit of Shah_Neshin peak, there is a place with seven ponds, known as Haft Cheshmeh or Haft Oduni.
Kho_Go_Nish:
Kho = Khab (place something), Go = Gav (bull), Nish (sting). A place where a snake has stung a bull. In the traditions referring to the Mehr worshipping, they used to place a bull in the direction of east and then sacrifice it. In the statues left from that era, at the time of sacrificing the bull, a snake and a scorpion were present and stinging the bull.
O_Ghazi:
O=Ab (water) means spring. Ghazi means judge, or god warrior.
KharZahreh(Oleander):
A green bush with beautiful white, red or pink flowers.
GeluNarBeshekar:
A water-hole where many hunts or prays could be found.
O_Gel_Ku:
O=Ab (water), Gel (mud), and Kuy (lane): A narrow passage beside water which was full of mud.
TakhtehBeshkar:
Rain-watered farms.
