Climbing a giant volcano like Damavand 5671 masl is very rewarding. Trkking to this huge peak in summer is not technically difficult and does not need require climbing skills but it needs a good physical fitness. Iran Mountaineering & Sport Climbing Federation asks all foreigners mountaineers who plan to go to Damavand in Iran for trekking, mountaineering, skitouring or snowboarding, from any route and in any season, to obtain a climbing permit. The price of Damawand Climbing Permit is 50 USD per person.

Damavand High Camp

The highest campsite on the southern route of Damavand Mountain Iran is called the Camp 3 Bargah Sevom, the third camp or simply Bargah. At this campsite there are two safe mountain resorts and some tenting and camping places for overnight and accommodation at altitude just above 4200 meters above the sea. Damavand Old Refuge at 4220 masl is the oldest shelter and Damawand New Hut at 4250 masl, is the newest resort in this area.

Mount Damavand Base Camp
The second campsite of Damavand is called Goosfand-Sara (or Mosque). Mount Damavand BaseCamp is situated at 3040 meters above sea level. This place is the starting point for the south route in summer season . In this campsite there is a small refuge, a mosque called Saheb al Zaman Mosque and a sheepfold. Unfortunately GoosfandSara is not a good campsite for camping and tenting in summer season because it is too crowded, very noisy and dirty. Find more info about Damavand Base Camp.

If you intend to climb Damavand from the southern route, the following campsites are the safest places for settlement. Damavand Acclimatization

In summer season trekking to Damavand peak is not difficult in technical terms. But physically it is a hard climb. The main challenges for this trek are Damavand Weather, sulfur smokes and acclimatization, the air gets thinner with less oxygen as you gain altitude. To increase the chance of success and lower the risk of AMS and to enjoy a safe trek to this peak it is necessary to get accustomed to this new environment. The best campsites to acclimatize for climbers who want to climb Damavand from south route are Camp 1 Polour Hut at 2250 masl and Camp3 Bargah New Hut at 4250 masl.

Difficulty of Mount Damavand Iran

Damavand Mountain in Iran is known for its mild trekking slopes. Climbing this 5671 meters (18,605 feet) gigantic mountain is technically moderate but physically it is a tough climb and requires a good physical fitness. The main climbing difficulties are Damavand Weather, acclimatization and the sulfur smokes. The difficulty of Damavand in summer is comparable to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Everest Base Camp. But Damavand Winter Climbing is a quite different story, it is very difficult and may be compared to 7000 meters summits or higher.

Damavand First Camp Polour

The first campsite on Damavand Mountain is called Polour Hut. It is the best starting point for trekking and climbing Damavand in Iran either from the classic south route or the west route. Polur complex mountain resort is a shortcut to the mountain and is a suitable place for accommodation and acclimatization. Polour Resort is a quite good mountain resort made by Iran Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation (also called Mountain Climbing Federation of Iran) and it is administered by the same organization.

Mount Damavand in Winter

The beautiful Damawand volcano is an excellent symmetrical cone with a narrow summit. It looks like Mount Fuji (Fujiyama) in Japan. In winter snow covers Damavand and the summit remains with snow-cap several months a year, the upper parts are snowy in spring and autumn. On the north face ice and hardened-snow remain on Damavand Glaciers all the year.  Damavand  lies about 80 kilometers driving distance north-east of Tehran in the northern Persian plateau. The white summit and its beautiful cloud cap are the most fascinating sight of Iran mountains.

Damavand Mountain Trekking Season

Climbing season for Damavand Mountain  is from mid June to mid September. In this season south route foot-steps are free of snow, the weather is generally good and travelers can go up by cars as far as Damavand BaseCamp, ( also called 2nd campsite or Goosfand Sara).

Trekkers with ordinary climbing experience are advised to try the mountain in this season. Damavand Mountain shelters and refuges are crowded during Iranian weekends and holidays. Best starting days is Saturday. Avoid travelling to the are in Iranian weekends (Thursday and Friday).

Damavand Mountain in Iran is the Highest Volcano in Asia. This huge mountain is located in the middle of Alborz Mountain Rage near the Caspian Sea.  Damawand is surrounded by numerous mountains, valleys and forests.
